Vacation to Utah

I'm finally updating my blog. Because I set lots of New Year's resolutions, and I have been working hard to try to accomplish them, I haven't had lots of room for computer time.

We went to Utah the week before Christmas because my family was going to be all together! This doesn't happen too often since Christian and Tara live in Boston and Ahren and Aaron are in Washington. So, here are some of the fun times we had:

I got to see Dad's new printer, and spend some time talking with him:

I introduced Ahren to the joys of a spiral curling iron. Isn't she cute? I loved getting to be around her again. Whenever I'm around my siblings (and their families) I always feel like they help me a better person.

We went out to eat for my Birthday at Won Won Wok! It was a lot of fun, we ate tons of sushi and other delicious dishes. We took home lots of leftovers, too. What a wonderful time with family.

When we came home, Tara had each person write a birthday wish for me on a balloon, and then we went outside and let them float up to the sky. Then we enjoyed yummy birthday cake she had also made. What a sweetheart. My whole family made the day so great.

Later that evening we went to "Coyote Creek" where Lisa's boyfriend, Preston works. There were lots of horses to see, and he let them brush one of his horses. We saw some baby goats, and we got to watch the BYU/Arizona bowl game on a big screen TV in his lobby

When we arrived in Utah, Dad had just had a new toilet installed in the basement, in preparation for the numerous grandchildren. But, there were no walls, so he found the biggest cardboard box he could find and put it around the toilet.

When I was younger, we had a toilet in our basement surrounded by a much bigger refrigerator box, that we fondly called the "Hahn John." Well, when we noticed that this newer Hahn John already had graffiti on the walls ("For a good time, call Lisa" [!]) Bob and Dad went to work to make a nicer bathroom. They framed it, and put up some temporary drywall.

Tara was as energetic and fun as ever. She went outside and had snowball fights and played in the snow with all the kiddos.

And, whenever boredom even seemed slightly emminent, Grandma always had fun activities ready, as usual. I'm sure my kids enjoyed this activity since play-dough has been banned at our home for two years and counting.

We went to Cabela's while in Utah. The kids loved the fish tank, and all the taxidermy specimens.

Here was a quick group photo after church. Daniel was not amused, nor was Ashlie. She did agree to sit near the group (just not too close to those crazy cousins.)

Well, I must admit that I didn't take many pictures while we were in Utah. All of the above pictures have been stolen from my sibling's blogs. I'm sure glad they were on the ball! As a result, I don't have any pictures of the last evening & day we spent in Utah, when we were at Bob's family's home. We arrived on Sunday evening, and I crashed on the couch for a short nap to make up for all my sleep deprivation. Then we had fun visiting with everyone and admiring the construction paper train track and village that covered the entire living room ceiling. Pretty impressive! The kids all had fun with cousins and all the relatives there. We headed home the next day amidst snowstorms, and made it back a couple of days before Christmas. Now we miss everyone more, but we are so thankful for all the wonderful memories!

Fill the spiritual needs

We could ask how well are we feeding, nurturing, training, and exercising the spirits of our children; or how well have we taught, trained, loved, and inspired our children to build their spiritual muscles and strength? … Remember, eternity is now, not a vague, distant future. We prepare each day, right now, for eternal life. If we are not preparing for eternal life, we are preparing for something else, perhaps something far less.”

Pray with your little ones

"Behold your little ones. Pray with them. Pray for them and bless them. The world into which they are moving is a complex and difficult world. They will run into heavy seas of adversity. They will need all the strength and all the faith you can give them while they are yet near you. And they also will need a greater strength which comes of a higher power. They must do more than go along with what they find.

They must lift the world, and the only levers they will have are the example of their own lives and the powers of persuasion that will come of their testimonies and their knowledge of the things of God. Be Wise In Our Diet

“…let us consider our relationship with ourselves. We must each take proper care to see that the little things regarding our personal life are in order. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland:

Only a teacher

"If any parent needs added inspiration to commence his God-given teaching task, let him remember that the most powerful combination of emotions in the world is not called out by any grand cosmic events nor found in novels or history books—but merely by a parent gazing down upon a sleeping child. That glorious biblical passage, 'created in the image of God,' will acquire new and vibrant meaning as a parent repeats this experience. Home will become a haven called heaven, and loving parents will teach their children 'to pray, and to walk uprightly before the Lord.' (D&C 68:28.)"

Raise up patriots

The importance of teaching & training

"In 1904, President Joseph F. Smith said to parents: “Do not let your children out to specialists … , but teach them by your own precept and example, by your own fireside. Be a specialist yourself in the truth.

… Not one child in a hundred would go astray, if the home environment, example and training, were in harmony with the truth in the gospel of Christ, as revealed and taught to the Latter-day Saints.”

The ideal way to transform your home into a house of learning is to hold family home evening faithfully. The Church has reserved Monday evening for that purpose. In 1915, the First Presidency instructed local leaders and parents to inaugurate a home evening, a time when parents should teach their families the principles of the gospel.

The Presidency wrote: “If the Saints obey this counsel, we promise that great blessings will result. Love at home and obedience to parents will increase. Faith will be developed in the hearts of the youth of Israel, and they will gain power to combat the evil influence and temptations which beset them.”

President David O. McKay gave the same promise in 1965 and added that the youth will gain power “to choose righteousness and peace, and be assured an eternal place in the family circle of our Father.”

In 1976, the Presidency reaffirmed that “regular participation in family home evening will develop increased personal worth, family unity, love for our fellowmen, and trust in our Father in heaven.

Considering these glorious promises, we would expect every faithful member to be exceedingly diligent in following this prophetic counsel. But, of course, we are all human, and our best plans don’t always materialize. Why not? Let it not be for lack of commitment."

Our Health Duty

Come to the Temple

"The season of the world before us will be like no other in the history of mankind. Just as this is the dispensation of the fullness of times, so it is also the dispensation of the fullness of evil.
