Meet Pepita

We have a new addition...Pepita!

I'm not a huge fan of animals.  I always said we would never get another dog until after Buddy and Rocky go to doggy heaven.  (And I really didn't want us to get another even then).  I swore that I would never have an inside dog.  But I'm raising children, and there are a few times that I've had to adjust my thoughts and plans during this parenting adventure.

A few months ago, I just started thinking that it might be really good for Andrew to have a dog.  He loves physical attention.  He's always smothering me with hugs and kisses.  He's also so scared of everything - the moose, the dark, etc.  Anyway, this "crazy idea" kept growing and we started searching online for dogs.  We had a lot of characteristics that we wanted in a dog - small (but not too small), cuddly, good with children, calm, protective, good natured, hopefully minimal shedding, house trained, a dog that would bond to Andrew, and the list goes on.  We started feeling like we were so picky.  Twice we came close to adopting dogs, and they were snatched up by other owners first.  Thank goodness!

This might sound funny, but I'm really thankful that God cares enough about the little details of our lives to answer our prayers that we would find the perfect match for our family.  So far, she seems to be.  We picked her up from a pet adoption center in Jackson Hole, Wyoming yesterday.  At first she and Andrew were both really shy, but they warmed up to each other.  We made sure that only Andrew was allowed to feed her, etc.  By the evening, they were fast friends.  In fact, we might need to train a little bit of separation anxiety out of her.  She will not leave his side.  She is calm, great with the kids, and I love that she doesn't demand a lot of physical attention from all of us, only Andrew.  She is part Wheaten Terrier, so her shedding should be really minimal (hopefully!)  They told us that she wasn't perfectly house trained, but so far she hasn't had any accidents.

We took her with us to our church's neighborhood roadside cleanup last night and everyone who met her commented on what a great temperament she has.  She and Andrew were fast friends by nightfall, and she went right to bed with him.

Early this morning, Bob went in to wake Andrew up.  He shook his shoulder, and Pepita growled a warning at Bob.  She has really bonded with our little guy.  Andrew is convinced that she is a "safety dog" who will help guard him from all danger, and his confidence level has soared just since yesterday.
